LARIMAR

<< Back

Larimar is a form of Pectolite, a volcanic mineral, found only in a single place in the Dominican Republic. In beautiful shades of soft aqua-blue and green it gets its colour from the copper content. There are often white dappled cloud-like patterns or cobweb-like reticulate patterns on the surface.  Larimar is usually shaped and polished but not faceted. The stone was named after Larisa, the daughter of Miguel Mendez, a geologist who helped reintroduce this stone, and mar the Spanish word for sea. The Larimar gemstone exists only in one region in the world in the Dominican Republic, not far from the border to Haiti. Only workers from the local villages are allowed to mine the stone. The rarity of this beautiful stone and the skill required to work with it dictates its high price. Larimar was commonly known as the Atlantis Stone.
