Sapphires are precious gemstones related to rubies. They can be found in many colours. There are blue, pink, yellow, green, white, purple and pink-orange sapphires. Six-sided asterisms sometimes occur in star sapphires (caused by inclusions of tiny, thin, parallel needles of rutile). Sapphires were once thought to protect the wearer from poisonous creatures. Sapphires are often heat treated to improve their colour.
