Amethyst is a form of the mineral quartz, and is a relatively common gemstone. Amethyst is usually purple, but can range in colour from pale lavender, very deep purple, reddish purple, to almost green. The ancient Greeks believed that amethyst made one immune to the effects of alcohol. It is the most popular of the Quartz varieties used in jewellery. The ancient Greeks believed that amethyst would curb the effects of alcohol so wine goblets were carved out of it. Amethyst was considered to be sacred to Buddha and rosaries are often made from it.
